My Closet and My Shopping Rule

This is my closet, and yes, it's organized by color. That's kind of what I'm well-known for in my family--organizing my closet by color. I've been doing it that way since I was 13, I think? I really don't change that much.

I don't have the problem that many women complain about--that of not wearing a lot of the clothes they own. I mean, right now I'm feeling like I don't wear much of what I own because I'm forced to wear all black 4 days a week. But in general, I enjoy wearing all of my clothes, and I never open my closet and think: "I don't have anything to wear!"

I credit this accomplishment to religious observance of my shopping rule: Only buy it if I'm in love with it. Don't buy it 'cause it's a good deal, don't buy it because I think other people will compliment me on it, don't buy it because it would be a really practical staple wardrobe piece. When I'm considering buying a shirt, or a dress, or a pair of shoes, I ask myself, "Will I regret it for the rest of my life if I don't buy this?"

If the answer's no, I really won't regret next week I won't even remember what color the shirt was! Then I don't buy it. If the answer is yes, years from now the pattern and style of this dress will haunt my dreams; then I buy it.

It's my theory that this shopping system saves money. Because how often can you honestly say of clothes that you are in love with them and will regret it for the rest of your life if you do not own them? This rule also makes sure that I get my money's worth out of my clothes. If I buy a $5 sweater that I didn't really love, but it was a good deal and I needed more winter clothes....I'm really not getting a whole lot of enjoyment out of that $5. If I buy a $12 pair of bright green skinny jeans and wear them again and again and smile every time I pair then with pink, purple, black, red, or blue shirts--I've made a good investment with my money!

This was one of those: If I don't buy it I will dream about this dress for the rest of my life dresses. I'm glad I bought it!

I have a few items though, that I hold onto without ever wearing them. Mostly they are hand-me-downs that people gave me. I keep those because I think they might come in handy someday, though they aren't something I would have picked out if given the choice.

I also have about 3 pairs of jeans that I bought during my freshman year of college that remain stubbornly too big for me. Apparently during that stage I gave up on finding jeans that actually fit?? I haven't worn them in a few years because they won't stay up without some major help from a belt--but I figure they are useful to keep around for future reference.

  1. I like your philosophy of shopping. I think you're what you love.

I adore your green dress. You look absolutely stunning!

  2. i need to work on that rule - to not just buy if it's a good deal! that dress looks amazing on you!!!

  3. Your rule is brilliant. I am trying to get better and better about not buying things just because they are on sale, but I still have a long way to go. Oh, and I totally organize by color too. You just have to!

  4. You are a skinny minnie!!!! LOVE that dress- it looks stunning on you! And I have to say, I do NOT prescribe to your shopping philosophy, but I probably should haha I have soooo many articles of clothing that I simply do not wear. I'm working on it! ;)

  5. I shop the same way - whether an item is $5 or $50, if I don't *love* it, I don't buy it. It's just not worth the money otherwise. I'd rather save the money and find something I need more, or love more. And like you said - I've never regretted NOT buying something I didn't love. :)

  6. I love this dress! And the green/blue color combo is so chic! I organize my closet the same - it's so much better!

  7. Amen! And that dress is so pretty. :)

    lace, etc.

  8. My closet is also organized by color. And in ROYGBIV order.

  9. That dress is a beauty!!! I need to adhere to your shopping mantra!

  10. You have quite the body! vavoom! haha I think that is a great rule to go by.

  11. I like your shopping rules. I'm a sucker for a good deal, but I do sometimes end of with things in my closet I don't love, and wouldn't buy again, even if they were a great price.

  12. your closet is color coded! i need to do that!!

  13. I'm very happily married and young....I'm 20. I was wondering if there was any advice you have about exploring sexual intimacy with your partner? Maybe something I could look up in the bible about it or some of your personal information? Thanks!

  14. I organize my closet by color too! Except there different sections for tanks, tops, and long sleeves. I love doing this challenge, because unlike you, I have a ton of stuff I just don't wear anymore and am happily giving it away. :)

  15. I totally agree! I don't buy something unless I love it, it fits perfectly and will make at least five outfits with what I already have in my closet. If it doesn't fit all three criteria, it doesn't come home with me. :)
I also organize my closet by color within type. ;) Have for as long as I can remember.

  16. Your rule is brilliant. I used to be so much more lax about what I bought, and now I'm doing the same thing as you. I decided if it's something I'll still be dying over a week or two later. A lot of times I'll even make myself wait several days before buying it to make sure it's exactly what I want.

I used to organize my closet my color, too! I stopped doing that when I brought out all my winter clothes.

  17. I should adopt your religious observance of shopping rules! I tend to buy stuff if I find a good deal, and often times I'm stuck with things that I don't like after wearing them once or twice. And that's no good! Thank you for the thought! Oh, and I love that green dress, sooo pretty!!!

    With Love,

  18. Those are great Rules to live by! I try to follow a similar system, but I must admit I do have a soft spot for a good deal. LOVE your dress btw!

Hello from a new follower. I found your blog from the Sunday Style link up.

  19. what a cute dress! came over from sunday style! newest follower so come stop by

  20. I like your shopping rule. That's a great idea. I fall often into that trap of buying things because they are a great deal. I can't imagine organizing my closet by color. But it's something I should try to see how it goes. I love how you've styled that green dress with blue tights.

  21. If there's something I think I love, I wait a week. If I can't stop thinking about it, I go back and buy it. Yeah, this is how I end up with expensive purses.
It seems like this system works for both of us!
