What Could You Wear it with?

Long revered as a question to determine whether a certain piece of apparel is worth purchasing or not, I'm here to show you today that "What could you wear it with?" is perhaps not the best possible question to ask when deciding whether or not to enlarge your wardrobe.

Instead of "What would you wear it with?" I prefer to interject, "Will you regret it for the rest of your life if you do not buy this item?" as a far superior budget saving question.

As proof, let me tell you the story of the shoes I've recently fallen in love with.

Maybe not specifically those. Maybe these:

In  general, Doc Martens. The first time I showed them to Angel at the store, he asked the ill-fated question. "Umm, what would you wear them with?"

"Everything!" I responded.

Obviously. Dresses, jeans, skirts--I can think of 101 outfits to wear Doc Martens with. The problem is not a lack of opportunity to wear them, the problem is rather the price of the shoes. For now, I do not own any, nor do I have any specific plans to buy a pair. No, instead I just enter a shoe store, walk straight to the Doc Marten section and start fondly caressing them until the sales guy asks, "Are you shopping for some Docs today?"

"No," I respond, "I'm just attracted to them."

I know I'm not the only one who admires them from afar. What's your favorite style of shoe?

  1. I always liked them, too.. But here in Germany there are just certain kinds of peole wo wear them and these are skinheads and neo-Nazis and because I do not look like a skinhead at all, I would get in real trouble wearing them at certain places..

  4. I've been seeing these a lot with skinny jeans. I understand about the attraction thing. I'm that way with booties. I'v worn mine twice, but I like looking at them.

  5. I have to ask myself this question all the time. Sometimes I realize I wouldn't actually wear it with anything, and I move it. My favorite type of shoes depends on the day, I think. But I do love my gray converse.

  8. Oh man. Doc Martens. I have had a love affair with those boots since Jr High. Over the years I have owned tall black ones, more tall black ones short black ones, black and white plaid ones, green ones, loafers (for work). Too many to count. They are just so wonderful and yes, you can wear them with anything!! Those blue ones are killer!

  9. Words out of my own mouth! I've loved Doc Martens, even before I knew what Doc Martens were. (My friend's brother had a silver pair; I called them "silver space boots".) I think they look fabulous with everything, especially giving a tough edge to dresses.

Howeeeeever, I'm a bit picky with my Martens, so I haven't gotten a pair yet. I want a used pair, in grey, silver or black, and I have tiny feet, so it's been hard to find that perfect boot...

  10. I remember being obsessed with yellow Doc Martins when I was in middle school. It was the grunge era and I wore nothing but plaid short skirts with black tights and faux combat boots. I would totally make the purchase.... they are and always will be in style.

  11. I want a pair, but I don't think I could pick just one color. And I really can't afford multiple pairs.
