The Random Writings of Rachel: Long-Awaited Family Photos

Long-Awaited Family Photos

If you've ever searched "family pictures" on Pinterest, you know what to expect. Little children giggling and covering their eyes in the background while Mom and Dad kiss. Parents holding babies and toddlers in their arms and throwing them in the air. Little ones piling onto Mom and Dad's lap.

These pictures are adorable. I love little families. However, I find you start to run into complications when your immediate family, composed of your parents, siblings, and spouse, is 10 people. Add to that the fact that most of the children are bigger than the parents, and the number of options for "cute" family photo poses greatly decreases.

I have a feeling Mom and Dad would require medical attention if we all tried to pile onto their laps like the toddlers we were years ago.

So, we have to banish any idea of "cute," and go for more of a "Group picture of all the members of a country music group" look instead.

Here's to grown up family portraits.

It was cold, which explains why nearly everyone is wearing jackets. Puffy winter coats would probably have been more appropriate, but they are too ugly. The wind was blowing our hair in our faces, and half of the family was wearing clothes borrowed from me or other relatives, because they own no clothes appropriate for Michigan weather and it doesn't make sense to buy any. But for the first time in over three years, we were all in the same place at the same time and that deserved documentation.

The staircase photo shot grows ever more mixed up and gradual.
By birth order, from left to right we are: #7, #6, #1, #4, Angel, #5, #2, and #3

Mom and Dad. :)

The most common complaint we heard when inspecting the photos resulting from the shoot was "Hey! Rachel's/Anna's/Rebekah's hair is blocking my face!"

But really, what else can you expect in a family full of curly-haired gals?

  2. I just started following you not too long ago and didn't realize you had so many siblings! It's great that you could get a picture with everybody :)
I don't know how, but we managed to get everybody (parents, siblings, step siblings, spouses, and kids equaling 13 people) together for a picture this fall.

  4. LOVE this! My family is in desperate need of some new family photos! The last ones we had done were 1 1/2 years ago at my wedding, and that doesn't really count, cause I was all in a wedding dress and such. HA! AND we'll have another addition to the family in January once my nephew is born! Pretty soon we'll have to redo Jt's side too, but that's easier because we all live in a 30 minute radius, instead of 3 different states!

  30. Hi Rachel! Thank you for visiting my blog through the Christian Bloggers link.
Your family is so beautiful! And how do your parents still look so young?
I come from a large family too, such a blessing. And we have only gotten everyone together a couple of times. It's just too hard, we're all over the place now. So wonderful that you have everyone close to you.

So nice to meet you. I'll be your new follower!

  32. I love family pictures. These are great! You are so right how different grown up pictures must be than those with little ones. I think these turned out beautifully! With the holidays coming up, we will need to do some of these as well. You have inspired me to take them outside regardless of the cold. What a difference than all of us trying to pile around a couch!

  36. Aah, Cute! I like to group large families, a group of two or three, a group of two or three, etc. and then place them apart from each other. It makes for a visually appealing photo and I find you don't have as many people blocking your view. That might be a good idea for next time...but I love that you got together to take some photos. It's amazing how long it can be put off and how important it is to capture those memories. Time is a funny thing..you can't get it back. At least photos are a compromise to "freezing" it. Your parents are soo cute!

  39. What a beautiful, big family!!! :) You all look amazing and you definitely got some good shots in there. I always find taking a family photo to be a challenge... usually at least someone has their eyes closed or their mouth open from talking... it's quite the undertaking to get a decent picture! We actually have to attempt it again ASAP for our holiday cards- yikes! ;)
