A Quoted Conversation

When my family is together, we occasionally have entire conversations made up of quotes from movies.

We also play board games.

There have been times when I'm watching a movie for the first time as an adult, and someone in the movie says something, and then suddenly I understand why my mom has been saying that random phrase my whole life.

I'll mention a few of the quotes that come up in daily life, and the situations in which we might use said quote.

1. When a child says or does something silly: "Logic! Why don't they teach logic at these schools?"

2. When we're out of a certain needed kitchen ingredient (typically not rum): "Why is the rum always gone?"

3. When a child is still doing something silly: "You're killing me, Smalls, you're killing me."

4. Randomly, for no particular reason: "You remind me of a man." "What man?" "The man with the power." "What power?" "The power of hoodoo." "Who do?" "You do!" "Do what?" "Remind me of a man.".....and on and on and on until the giggling becomes too much....

5. In case of a minor misunderstanding: "What we've got here is failure to communicate."

6. When we want to scare our baby sisters: "My precious..."

7. When we want to initiate a sword fight: "Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly... stupid."

8. When we want to show how much we detest something: "I hate all the orphans in the whole world!" (Orphans is typically replaced with something like: cabbages, laundry, cockroaches, etc.)

9. Whenever anyone, anywhere, mentions the word "kicks" or how often they practice any skill: "I practice my kicks like, 6 or 7 times a year."

10. When we want to intimidate someone: "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."

11. Telling someone else to hurry up: "What you are about to do, do quickly."

Okay, so there's a totally out-of-context Bible verse there, and at least one Youtube video, too. Actually, there are a lot of Youtube quotes in my house, mainly from "Kid Snippets" videos that I've never seen, so even I don't understand all cultural references that occur in this house.

What is your most-often used movie quote?

I love number 7... though I'm not sure I'd remember to quote that if challenged to a sword fight!
Most quoted line in our house, Malcolm has suddenly picked up some line from Blackadder which is driving me crazy.

I love Kid Snippets! We are actually big Kid History fans. (from the same people as Kid Snippets) and we quote it all the time! And I'm proud to say I know where almost all your quotes came from!

Ha! People don't realize, but about half the things I say in real life are quotes from movies or TV shows, and usually I'm the only one who gets it! I have to explain it to my husband a lot...

First, let me just say... AHHHH!!! The Hobbit game is so much fun! :) I recognized most of these quotes - my family and I also speak fluently in movie quotes and, like Allie@Everyday Adventures mentioned above, we often have to explain ourselves.

Oh my word - we do this too!!! And then I tell Nate to "name that movie"... And he never can!!! He also will always misquote Bible verses to me... and then tell me that it's ok because he's in seminary... Yeah, we're freaks. ;-)

AH I love this! And I love that I know like 95% of these quotes. I too say "I HATE THE ORPHANS" whenever I'm displeased with something. Or another favorite in our house (well, one of MY favorites) is "Your mom goes to college."

The other day I randomly blurted out "IT'S BECAUSE I WAS NAPPING!" from The Italian Job and of course Isaiah didn't remember that line so we had to rewatch it...

Haha, hilarious!

The failure to communicate one always reminds me of my Dad. When cellphones came out and you could put a special ringtone for specific people, he had that quote as his ringtone from my grandma (they tend to argue a lot about nothing). haha

you just reminded me of so many good movies! :)

Ahh so many good ones! I have to say that most of the movie quotes thrown around here come from "Anchorman"

Hahaha We use a lot of sitcoms more than anything - movies it'd probably be Old School because Will Farrell is HA-larious in that flick. Oh and Wedding Crashers. Other than that around here its a LOT of Seinfeld. :) Have a great one Rachel! -Iva

hehe, fun quotes! :) I have to say, hubby and I watch a lot of futurama, so we often end up quoting lines from that at odd moments. :)

Oh boy, I only knew two! And I'm not even sure that "Why is the rum always gone!" is really from POTC like I think it is, haha. I use My precious aaaaall the time when I talk about something I love, especially my Nikon camera. And my boyfriend sometimes calls me "Old Sport" since we saw The Great Gatsby. But otherwise, I can't really think of movie quotes I use in daily life. xo

I love these! I'm a huge fan or the logic quote :) I know that I use random movie quotes, but I can't remember any right now. I'll let you know next time I use one :P

I got the Pirates of the Caribbean, Sandlot (I use this one with my students!), Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, and, my personal favorite (not because I like the movie, just the song), Labyrinth! But what is #1?!
