A Month of Adventure

 {This outfit is well within my comfort zone, not adventurous in the slightest.}

I have no scientific data to back this up, but I have a feeling that I use the word adventure a little more often than the average person. I've long been convinced that the best stories in life come from the not-so-perfectly-planned days, from the times when we permit ourselves to do something a little scary and different, something outside our normal.

I view life as a series of adventures, and therefore as a series of stories that ought to be told.

My comfort zone, as far as writing, is randomness. {Clearly...} I struggle to stick to a theme or topic for an extended period of time. As soon as I finish writing about something, perhaps a pair of fancy sparkly shoes, I want to write about something completely different, perhaps about how useful mashed potatoes can be in one's everyday life.

I've long thought about challenging myself to stick to writing about one topic or theme for an entire month. It would force me out of my comfort zone of randomness and it would give me valuable writing practice...and yet I could never pick the perfect theme, until suddenly it became completely obvious:

For all my passion for the stories of a life lived well...I have my comfort zones. I don't call people on the phone. I don't talk when I'm in a completely new environment surrounded by people I've never met before (I think I hide my terror well, but Angel says the scared grin on my face gives me away) Driving to places I've never been before is something to be avoided at all costs, and I actually don't even like travel itself all that much. I love adventure--but just as fiercely I love staying home with my husband, making my favorite dinners again and again, and enjoying the company of friends that I already have.

Hey--I even have a comfort zone when it comes to the way I dress--it may not look much like someone else's comfort zone, but it is mine, so, for me, wearing a frilly dress with too-bright tights, polka dot shoes, chunky studded leather bracelets, and a kitty ears headband is easy, almost automatic.

All this to say--as you can imagine, things might be slightly different on this blog for the rest of February. The word adventure might get overused a little bit. Expect posts about finding adventure in everyday life, and trying new things, things I've been scared to do or talked myself out of or simply things that are different than the usual. I might throw in a few stories of past adventures. To put it in those oft-used but still thrilling words: Expect the unexpected.

And hey, if you want to join me, do it! Even if it's just one post about what adventure looks like in your life, let me know so I can read what you wrote!

Great post, aww love the idea of adventures :) I can't stick to a theme, first its food, then fashion then... but adventure sounds great, bit cold for us to go to far at the minute though :(

Looking forward to reading your adventures!

haha and this line made me laugh: "perhaps about how useful mashed potatoes can be in one's everyday life."

I love this idea! I try to constantly step out of my comfort zone, I really believe that is what makes me grow as a person - it is so hard sometimes! Can't wait to see what this month brings you :) Love the zippers on that dress, btw!

This is such a fun challenge for yourself! I'm looking forward to reading more about it during February. I think so many of us get stuck in our comfort zones, and it's always interesting to mix things up.

I love this idea! I, too, actually use the word adventure in my everyday life quite a bit. Trying something different, even if it's the littlest thing, is an adventure. Jim and I have "little adventures" all the time! Oh, I love that dress in your picture!

This reminds me of a Sesame Street episode. The word of the day ; ADVENTURE!! You should have seen the crazy things those monster puppets were getting into. I'm telling you, their idea of adventure is very, very different than mine. How was that for weird!? LOL.. I just read your profile and it says that your husband thought you were weird when he first met you. I like that.
I don't think I would be very good at keeping to a theme for a whole month either. Mind you- adventure is a pretty good theme.. you can work with that!

Can't wait to read about your adventures this month! I love the quote, "Do at least one thing every day that scares you."I think it is good that we get out of our comfort zones. I don't call people on the phone either!

I use adventure way too much too. Moving to a new state has really helped me challenge comfort zones. Now I am excited to explore and do new things. I can't wait to read yours! You should write them on a Monday post and link it to "the positives" :). Also, is it weird if I compliment your hands? I love pretty hands, and you got good ones

adventures inside your comfort zone are the best kinds-- you eliminate all the fear of the unknown and just have as much fun as you can in your 'sweet spot.' okay, 'sweet spot' sounds strange, but i'm reading this new book 'quiet' that explores how we can learn about the ideal environment for our personality and then increase our comfort level. this ideal environment is called the sweet spot. anyway- i'm too chatty- it's a good book :)

That is an awesome, unique dress and you have totally made it your own the way you styled it. I want a B+W Polka Dot Scarf badly. Those Magenta Sneakers are awesome.

The word ADVENTURE is over-used a lot. I am looking forward to seeing your adventurous month through the blog. You got a new fan and follower.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and please stop by again. Also, link up this beautiful outfit through my first ever link up from Jan 29th. It is open until tomorrow Feb 4th Midnight PST. Thanks again. Ada. =)

First of all - I LOVE that dress! Second, I love the idea of being adventurous and the idea that adventure looks different for everyone. We all have our comfort zone that is hard to step out of. I can't wait to continue reading about your adventures!

Expect the Unexpected was the original name of my blog. I started it that way because it was about military life.
With a post I just wrote about our upcoming move, I'll throw in "adventure"!

You seriously ROCK that style. I couldn't pull that look off. :)
I struggle with sticking to one topic in general, whether it be writing OR talking. I constantly get sidetracked.

I love the way you make a style your own - the zipper details are super cute!

That dress is so uniquely cool and so you...love! I feel ya on the randomness thing. My brain jumps all over the place all of the time. The conversations I have with my girlfriends and my husband are so all over the place sometimes I have to laugh.
