How to Not Shop for Clothes

 Crazy wind...

Quick! Take my picture in between gusts!

I like clothes as much as the next girl. In fact, possible more than some girls. I'm not addicted to shopping, but I enjoy it. However, the only piece of clothing (including shoes and accessories) that I've bought in 2014 (other than these $4 jeans) is this dress. And the primary reason I bought it was because I had a gift card to eShakti so I only had to pay $13 out of pocket for this adorable dress.

I also haven't made a big deal about a no shopping oath or ban of any kind, I simply haven't bought clothes. Here's how I go months without buying new clothes:

1) Be highly motivated.

My motivation is the fact that we're moving in a couple of months and I probably won't even be able to take all of the clothes I already own and love with me. This upcoming move is enough to motivate me both as far as saving money and not adding any more items to everything that we already have to pack. If there's no motivation, no reason to avoid buying new clothes, you might as well buy them!

For other people, the motivation may be something different. Needing to save money to buy something more worthwhile than clothes. Having a closet that's already overflowing. Planning to be wearing a different size of clothing soon. For me, it's the prospect of moving.

2) Don't hang out in the mall long enough to fall in love with something.

I love the mall. It's silly, but I do. I couldn't stay away forever, but my strategy is to only go with Angel. Angel walks very fast and I don't have the time to fall in love with a new dress, but I still get the fun of looking at pretty things and interesting people, which is why I really love the mall.

3) Be a blogger.

Obviously I don't count accepting clothing reviews as "shopping"--and you can bet I'm taking that fuchsia dress eShakti sent me for review with me when I move! But as a blogger who occasionally gets a new piece of clothing to review, that can satisfy that slight itch for something new in the closet!

4) Love the clothes you already have.

I love my wardrobe. Maybe I'm biased, but my dresses and shoes, the ones I already own, are my favorite dresses and shoes in the whole world. Choosing outfits out of what I already own is a happy process. I think not shopping would be much harder if I didn't like the clothes that are already in my closet. In my opinion, the foundation to being able to skip shopping for months at a time is to build a closet of clothes that you truly enjoy wearing.

I don't feel like I'm missing out by not shopping, even if the sparkly and colorful things still catch my eye.

What's the longest you've ever gone without buying anything new?

  1. Haha! Not very long...although I guess up until about a year and a half ago I did go several years with buying only one or two things...maybe that explains why I'm now playing catch up..ha!

  2. I don't go very long without buying new. But I only buy from thrift stores of massive clearance reduction racks. That way I don't spend a lot of money AND I get to shop!

  3. I can go a long time without buying clothes, but that's mainly because they're so expensive. :) I love your last point about loving the clothes you already have. I recently got rid of all but six of my shirts. I used to stand in front of my closet and think, "I don't like these clothes, I need to go shopping", but now I look in my closet and think, " I love that shirt!". Thanks for sharing!

  4. Cute dress! I don't like the price of new clothes so that helps to not spend there. But the thrift store is another story. It is hard to pass up a skirt that fits well, is a color I love and was the perfect price of $1 at a local thrift store. I wore it yesterday for Easter and it is one I will get lots of use out of this spring and summer. And your advise of loving what we already have is spot on. Makes me want to clean out my closet again! Thanks for sharing. Stopping by from Modest Mom link up.

  10. I usually wait to buy new clothes when I can go to an outlet mall, because you can get some amazing deals. I don't have any outlet malls anywhere near me, so this doesn't happen very often. Lubbock doesn't have the greatest places for deals, so that helps me stay on a budget too!

  11. It's so true! You would think blogging would make shopping worse, but at least for me it's helped a ton! Haha and I love the wind comment. I've so been there!

  12. I love this! I love clothes, but I also know there are FAR more important purchases to be made, and I have a ton anyway :)

    PS...that dress is adorable!

  13. Yes that's what I'm working on this year, loving what I have! I have a LOT of clothes but almost everyday walk in with an "I have nothing to wear" feeling - so I'm clearing out my closet and donating at the end of the year things I haven't worn and replacing with clothes that I will actually wear slowly and very thoughtfully. Love your dress you look SOO cute Rachel :) Happy Monday love -Iva

  14. I don't buy things either! I am really cheap and always think that there is something else our money could be used for! But, Rob is the shopper and he's the one that usually encourages me to shop and spend.

  15. I think the longest I went without buying clothes was when I was pregnant with my twins 8-9 months. I think in that time I may have spent $2 at a yard sale but that's it. Money was too tight to buy new things and I already had maternity clothes from my past pregnancy. I love your dress, so adorable. The mall actually stresses me out once I am there but I still look forward to some shopping.

  16. The love your clothes you already have one is puuuurfect! Mrrow. Purfect. I don't know why I went into cat mode there, but I did.

I think "keep yourself busy" could fit on this list, too, because when I'm at college, I literally don't have a chance to shop. I haven't bought but two dresses this entire year and I think that's pretty awesome! The rest of the stuff I've received is free internet sponsor stuff... so that doesn't really count, I suppose, haha. :D I'm also one of those people who hoardes money so... shopping is sort of a love/hate thing when I do it.

  17. It is definitely really hard for me not to! I find that if I don't go online I can be really good because I have no time to go to the stores that is for sure!

  18. I really like that dress!

I love my clothes. I basically live in jeans and t-shirts.

  20. I've been doing a decent job of not buying clothes because of the wedding. But clothes FOR the wedding weekend. That's a whole different story. I've justified buying new outfits for the BBQ the night before, to get ready in the day of, my beautiful wedding dress of course, a cute outfit to wear at the bonfire, and a brunch outfit for the day after. It is RIDICULOUS.

  21. This dress is adorable! I love how you styled it! I go long stretches without buying anything and then Target seems to get tons of cute things in:) I've been trying to remix things I already have in my closet, which I've really enjoyed. Hope you're having a great day!

  22. i'm with ya on the 'love the clothes you already have' - sometimes i go shopping just to be reminded.. i'll be browsing around and think 'i have something similar' or 'i like mine more' and then i go home with 7 kinds of joy and excited to wear my old stuff. SOMETIMES, however, i realize nothing i own is as cute as x or y or z, and i end up with all sorts of bags....

  23. I think I'm in my longest stretch of not buying anything right now... spending freeze month!

  25. I am crazy sentimental about my clothes- most of them contain a memory or event that makes it so difficult to part with sometimes. Still, my rule is whatever comes in, and equal or greater amount has to go- so I'm not hoarding. I also agree with another comment: I shop in spurts too. Sometimes I buy a lot and other times I go for long stretches without buying anything.

  26. ha ha. Don't ask that question : )

I am terribly weak when it comes to adding to my "collection" since that is really what my closet has become.

When I was younger and I had to save to travel or live overseas I was better at limiting myself as you are doing.

I am now trying to avoid malls and shopping. Easier said than done though when even my grocery store sells clothes.

  27. I think I need to start fresh with my closet- just not in love with my wardrobe like you are with yours!

  28. I'm with you on this! I very rarely shop. Last year I think I went at least 6 months without buying clothes, and it wasn't even something I thought about. But I've been purging my closet lately and I'm desperately in need of some summer clothes, so that will be changing soon! There are just so many other things I'd rather spend my time and energy on.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I rarely shop either. I already have so many clothes... clothes that could fill an entire room and I already donated 500+ things. If I do shop, it is clearance racks or with gift cards (if to a particular store) or get free clothes from blogging :-) It's not really hard not shopping... I just don't. I just don't go to stores and wander around, unless if at Walmart or Target (but I still don't purchase). I want to save my money for other things.

  30. This dress is adorable. I struggle with the not shopping thing because I do so much online shopping and you just can't escape it!

  31. Wow, I don't think I could go very long without shopping for clothes! I love shopping as a way to de-stress, but sometimes that gets me in trouble!

  32. It fits like a dream, the color is true to the picture and fast shipping was a plus. I really like the fact that it came with a shawl so you don't have to do any extra shopping for one.

  33. Stopping by from the SITS Sharefest... Great post! I think that looking into my own closet for staple pieces and then wearing them in different ways has worked for me. If I go to the mall I end up getting overwhelmed and spend too much money. I love your dress--so cute!

  34. Ok this is great! I love this. I too love the mall and get so inspired seeing pretty things ( yet I hardly ever buy them)
I too love getting something free to review. I too am on a mission to only have my fav clothing in my closet to keep it simple!
I found you today via #SITSShareFest!

  35. Love this dress! I can relate, it is very easy for me not to buy stuff when I am out 'window' shopping. Even as much as I love dresses, it isn't that hard for me to just say no to new ones sometimes. :-)

  36. Love the dress!

And I am currently on hiatus from shopping. Losing weight can be a real motivator to stay out of the stores. There's really no point in purchasing clothing in my current size since I'm hoping to drop down one more by next month. Fingers crossed. We shall see!

  37. Visiting from SITS. Love that dress on you - the red buttons are perfect! I need to be better about shopping my closet instead of the mall. Have a great day!
