Waffles vs. Pancakes

There are two kinds of people in  this world: Waffle eaters and Pancake eaters.

First, there are the Waffle folks. Although the two are made with the same kind of batter, and often topped with precisely the same toppings, these people invariably prefer waffles. Either because waffles look more exciting, or because they're crunchier, I can't tell, but for whatever reason, they prefer waffles to pancakes. These people are the dreamers.

Then, there are the Pancake People. They'll eat waffles, but when given the choice, they prefer pancakes. Why? Because they recognize that waffles and pancakes are basically the same thing...and they also recognize that pancakes are much easier to make and require less clean up because all you need is a skillet. No need to drag out the heavy belgian wafflemaker from the pantry in the first place, and no need to figure out how in the world to fit it in the kitchen sink when clean up time comes. Pancakes are practical, they require less energy expenditure, and for that reason alone they are superior.

In case it wasn't completely obvious from the way I so equally portrayed both sides, Angel's a Waffle kind of guy, and I'm a Pancake girl. Which are you?

*Kodiak pancake mix is my all-time favorite mix. Made-from-scratch pancakes with just the right recipe could possibly be better, but I've never made those.

  1. lol, I am a pancake eater all the way. Mostly because of the exact reasons that you listed. Waffles are just fancy pancakes. And when you've got 15 assignments in your inbox and a 3 year old clinging to your leg whining about how hungry she is (even though she's already had two bowls of cereal) you tend to do what's easiest... I'm #teampancake all the way!

  2. I only like waffles if I can put yummy stuff on top of them, like strawberries and whipped cream. The good thing about pancakes is that they're fine on their own or all dolled up!

  3. i love both! but tend to gravitate towards making pancakes because you're right, they're easier. also i dont have a waffle maker... yet! ha

  4. They're both delicious but only when someone else makes them. I feel like they're both messy to make (i stink at flipping pancakes!)

  5. Definitely a waffle girl! My mom made waffles every weekend growing up and then bought me my own waffle iron for my college graduation!

  6. I love pancakes any time. I have to be in a waffle mood. Plus, some breakfast places don't get their waffles crisp enough and then the whole experience is ruined!

  7. I love waffles but I almost always crave pancakes, so I will go with pancakes and they are easier to make. Plus our wedding gift waffle maker was a piece of junk, so we need a new one. Rachel

  8. Thank you for your comment. My roommate in college told me about Picasa and I long forgot about it, thanks for the reminder. I will try it, our laptop is super old and slow but I will give it a go. Rachel xo

  9. I like Eggos and buy those for home. But when I'm out, I always order pancakes instead. So I guess I'm a waffle at home, pancake out kinda girl :)

  10. This is awesome! I actually love both...pancakes are easier to make and often come in more exciting flavours, but waffles do have the better texture :-)

  11. I don't like either! I prefer yogurt or an avocado sandwich for breakfast!

  12. I'd probably identify myself as a pancake kinda-gal...but if I'm feeling adventurous, I go out on a limb for waffles ;)

  13. Waffle girl 100%. I love going to brunch on Sunday mornings just for my waffles. I have no problem cleaning up whatever to enjoy a delectable waffle - they're glorious and actually true Belgium waffles is not at all the same batter as pancakes - so there is a difference ;) They're crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It's perfection! (and Yes I am a total dreamer) Have a great one Rachel! -Iva

  14. Ooooh, homemade Belgian waffles with whipping cream and strawberries on top, and Canadian maple syrup of course! Why? Could be the crunch, but it could be because my husband takes the helm at the waffle maker.

  15. Haha this is so true! I prefer waffles, but pancakes are good too, and they certainly take a lot less effort! I'll have to look for that pancake mix. I always use the store-brand of Bisquick, I actually prefer it over Bisquick!

  16. I eat waffles when I go out, because of all the work involved. I ain't making that at home! But I never order restaurant pancakes, because mine are better. I make perfect pancakes. So does that make me a pancake person?

  17. I'm definitely a pancake eater. Waffles just aren't the same-I like the fluffiness of pancakes.

  18. Waffles!!! I love their crispiness (So if they're soggy it's a deal-breaker!), but I mostly eat pancakes (Ahem, crumpets. Since to me pancakes mean crepes.) since we have no waffle maker.

  19. Hahaha. My husband will eat either, but I think he prefers pancakes.

Me? Neither, thank you. I don't really care for them- no matter the shape!

  20. Isaiah will ALWAYS choose waffles over pancakes...I will almost always choose pancakes over waffles if we're cooking them at home. If we're eating out, whatever (although I usually refuse to pay $10 for a single waffle that I know costs them like 50 cents to make) but at home...you said it, sister. Pancakes are less work and you get more of them out of one batch of batter.

  21. I will choose waffles every time if I'm not making them. Otherwise it is pancakes all the way.

  23. Ha ha! So true! Pancakes are way easier to make, so they get my vote, too:)

  24. Waffles all the way! I hate how the syrup easily slides off of pancakes. The squares are nice little syrup bowls, so every bite has maple goodness :)

  25. if i'm making breakfast, it's pancakes because they're easier. but sometimes a fluffy waffle made at a restaurant is nice. especially if there's lots of yummy fruit.

  26. Waffles fo SHO! Crunchier AND those little nooks and crannies for pools of butter to lay in! Mmmmm!

  27. Haha this is too funny. Is it possible that i am not a waffle or pancake person!? I like them both, and since Tyler cooks breakfast I will take whatever he puts in front of me haha!

  28. Team Waffles all the way! Pancakes absorb syrup and turn into a gross soggy mess! Waffles have the crispy exterior as a barrier but still have a nice fluffy inside!

  29. Waffles. I love the little squares to put the butter in. And I asked my boyfriend to buy me a waffle iron for me sometime.

  30. I love waffles more than pancakes, but I cannot make waffles. I've tried, and it's always a disaster. So pancakes it is! Chocolate chip, usually. Because obviously. ;)

  32. I'm a Pancake Girl. Especially since we moved to Belgium and I realized that I'll never be able to make a waffle at home to rival an actual Belgian waffle, so at home its pancakes (the American kind of pancake, because its something different here, so you can't even buy them) and waffles when we're walking around. Because Belgian waffles are an afternoon snack!

  33. I rarely eat waffles.. only the frozen kinds. But if I had the choice to eat a REAL waffle or a pancake. I would soooo go waffle; as long as I didn't have to do the clean up because it sounds awfully messy!

  34. Both are super delicious, it's too hard of a choice for me! However, in my mind, waffles are more filling than pancakes (this is a really weird mental thing). So, if I'm extra hungry I gravitate towards waffles.

  35. waffles are my favorite, but i hate making them! inevitably the first few don't turn out and its so frustrating. pancakes are so much easier to make, and i love experimenting with add ins.

  36. I enjoy eating waffles more - yeah, it's definitely the crunch factor - but making pancakes more - the flipping is so satisfying. Best of both worlds, maybe?

  37. I like to go for the unmentioned third option-- french toast! ;) But, if I had to choose between waffles and pancakes, I would definitely choose pancakes!

  38. I'm definitely a waffle girl, but usually just make pancakes at home out of pure laziness. Last time we made waffles I told Tyler I was never cleaning the waffle iron again! haha

I love it when other people make me waffles though!

  39. i saw these on shark tank a few weeks ago.
