Blue is Back
Some people like fine highlights, others like them chunky. I prefer mine blue.
I gave up unnaturally colored hair before moving to China to teach last year, as I knew I'd need to maintain a professional appearance (blue hair not included). Since I'm no longer working, I figured I ought to take advantage of the opportunity to color my hair again.
Finding hair color product was not as easy here as it is back in the USA. In Michigan, all I had to do was run to the local pro store, pick out my favorite brands, flash my license, and go home to my tool kit and get it done.
Here, I had to go to one of the most interesting 'malls' in Penang, where there was a rumor that stores selling professional hair products existed. We couldn't find any of the shops till we asked a guy working in a salon to point us in the general direction. Once we got going, we actually found four different pro shops--but all were quite small, without the variety I'm used to. At each of the first three shops we struck out where blue color was concerned, but at the 4th and final shop in the mall I finally found blue--not the bright blue I'd been hoping for, but blue nonetheless.
I decided to do a fairly fine slice through my bangs compared to the chunky blue streaks I've rocked in the past, because I wasn't sure how much I'd like this shade of blue. It's very dark, nearly a "navy blue," which feels like an odd shade in my hair--almost like a very 'subtle' blue--if blue hair could ever be called subtle. I feel like to really get the effect I want with this navy blue, I'd have to do slices of the color all throughout my hair. I prefer the insanely bright blue I used to have. (Check out that link to see the variety of styles and colors I've had in recent years.)
I'm still feeling my way with this one--this color is permanent color on bleached hair, in the past I used semi-permanent on bleached hair, so I'm going to see how this one fades and see if it turns into the lighter, brighter blue I'm looking for. It's been a few days since these photos were taken and the blue has lightened a little and become more visible, which I'm liking--when it's too dark, it kind of blends into my dark hair. Weird, huh? I might end up adding a thicker chunk to my bangs or else I'll cut my bangs differently so that the blue shadow shows through a little better.
I missed my blue hair so much, and even though I feel this isn't quite the look I want yet, I love having the familiar feeling of looking up through a blue fringe of hair again. I do wish I could get my old Tressa Xtremers Blue back ...or maybe I'll compromise with another color (purple)...though I do love blue best.
What's your favorite color for hair? I think mine's obvious. If it's not dark brown...it's blue!

Your hair looks great! And that's a really pretty dress.
The blue looks great on you! Your mind me of my friend from high school who would dye her hair different colors like blue and purple. It is a fun form of self-expression! 😀
I have always wanted blue hair, but my face screams "blond" features - so It is hard for me to rock any darket color, sadly :(
I had blue hair in highschool and since I'm unemployed again I'm very seriously considering dying it blue again! So ironic that I'd come across your post! Unfortunately, I'm thinking I may need to get back into the job market soon so it may not happen for me. It's a shame that we can't more easily get away with colored hair in the professional world...
I loved the violet/gray trend that was all over the internet this summer but "unnatural" colors aren't allowed at my job. Blue is your color!
Hi Rachel. I love your hair and your blog!! I am a teacher too :)
Joanna
You look awesome! I currently have pink and blue ombre, and I'm loving it! I prefer the pink though, but for some reason the blue just won't leave my hair, in spite of it being (supposedly) the colour that washes out most easily! :)
I think the blue looks good one you...I'm not one for dying my hair much -in my 20's I went through every color. On me I like pink.
I like it!! I have always wanted to die my hair dark- but I just don't like doing anythingthat requires maintenace on my hair...I don't even go get it cut
I love your hair and the dress is TOO cute!
I LOVE it! I was just telling my hairstylist yesterday that I want to do something bold with my hair. Like get a purple streak or something!
Cute outfit...love the polka dots!!
That's a bold and amazing look. I love those blue shades! :)
You know there have been a couple instances when I found myself in between official jobs and I always get the urge to change up my hair color. It is so fun and I LOVE color, bright ones, mixed with my brown hair. The blue looks awesome. I've been considering dip dying my ends with purple or maybe a couple chunky streaks I can hide with certain hairstyles. There's such a fun sense of mischief for me when I know it's there, but it isn't visible!
I think it looks cute and I think it is a perfect fit with your colorful style! :)
I had always wanted to do dark red and ended up doing it a month or two ago. I love it!
Hi Rachel :) This is a fun look! I've colored my hair blue, green, blonde, red, and blue green before! I guess red and blonde are not worth mentioning because they are "natural" colors, but they definitely aren't when you're Asian! I love the chunky strip of color. It's a good compromise or in between if you don't want to go all out! I fried my hair real bad when I went completely blue the last time. Yikes! Anyway, this looks GREAT on you!!

Love the blue hair with your dress...I am not a fan usually of the unnatural hues...but it does look good with your dark hair and your dress is fab too!

Ah, Rachel, this is so cute! That's interesting how it sort of blends into your hair at times. Makes sense, though, since your hair is fairly dark. I do hope it brightens up for you, though! I love blues/greens on hair--especially if it's fully that color, mermaid-style! I would definitely go for a shade of peachy pink or even a streak of pink if I felt daring. I've never colored my hair or anything like that, though, and have a strange fear of it.
First off...LOVE that dress! Just makes me smile : )
Glad to see you having some fun again with your hair. It's a quirky little personal statement.
bisous

That looks awesome, and I still really love that dress! :D I actually used to want to streak my hair a subtle dark blue, but I never ended up doing it. (I have yet to color my hair, har har.)
Love the blue hair! I've dyed my hair tons of different colors, but never anything like that. You rock it!
When it comes to bold highlights like that I like them chunky too! I also think they look best on dark hair like yours. I saw a girl at a fashion show last weekend with dark brown hair and a blue section that looked great (like yours). How fun!
Love shade of blue for your highlights!!

I have ALWAYS wanted to dye my hair blue!!
Oooh so pretty! Way to be bold. :-)
love it!!! also thanks for linking back to your other hair colors, enjoyed seeing those! i haven't dyed my hair since 16 and i'm rocking quite a few grey around my crown. it's a little weird for a 28 year old but i had someone ask me a few weeks ago if i purposely went and got it professionally dyed so i guess the grey thing might happen? hah
I love pink for hair, but when I had pink hair it was a pain to maintain! Daaamn, the bathroom was pink, the pillows were pink, the walls were pink! The downside of having colored hair is that the dyes always fade too quickly and since I'm a lazy bum, I got tired of dying it often.
Love the new blue addition, I do like you more in purple though :D Purple just makes your features stand out and glow.
That looks so fun!!! I love when people can rock blue hair
Fun dress, Rachel!
Nice! When I was teaching I felt so very "blah" about myself. No crazy hair colors, no visible tattoos, no piercings, no excessive makeup, no super loud/flashy clothing. I had to tone myself dooooown.
I told my husband, "You know what this makes me feel like doing? Getting tattooed on every inch of my body that's under my clothing. So that when I get home from work I can take off my clothes, look at myself in the mirror and say, 'There I am!!'"
So now that I'm not teaching anymore, you know what I've done with myself??
Absolutely nothing.
Haha! The demure life grew on me ;-)
(Love the blue, btw :) )
