What's Your Signature?

I've been thinking lately about 'signatures.' Those little things I do for no other reason than because I am myself and it's just the sort of thing I do. Sometimes we choose habits or accessories purposefully and they become a 'signature' part of our nature...other times it's more accidental, perhaps we don't even realize we have these signatures until other people point them out in some way.

What are my signatures? I've figured out a few habits of mine that have held pretty consistently over the years.

- Wearing lots of rings. The exact number varies, because sometimes I lose a ring that didn't  fit very well. It's currently 9 rings. All of my rings are silver and free of stones except my wedding set, and I wear them all, all the time. I wear them on six of my fingers, four on one hand, two on the other.

-Only choosing 'novelty' earrings. I do have some normal earrings, because people give them to me, but I'll never pick out a pair of earring because they are nice and look pretty. In my collection I have paper clips, safety pins, forks, zipper pulls, spoon handles from actual spoons, bumble bees, robots, nesting dolls, origami birds (those are what I'm wearing in the photo, although there's no close-up shots)...and while I do break out the normal earrings on occasion, I prefer my forks.

- Writing with colorful pens. There's these Pilot G-2 pens that are very practical and come in all sorts of colors. I use them for just about all my handwriting, from written letters to grading papers to writing in my planner to making grocery lists for Angel. I currently have lime green, purple, turquoise, and a light blue. At some point I decided to stop reaching for any old black pen when I needed to write something down and use a colorful one instead--now these are the pens I keep with me and automatically use.

- Short hair. At this point, I can't even picture myself with genuinely long hair. I toy with the idea of growing out my hair periodically but hair that's actually past my shoulders is LONG for me. Right now I'm considering going back to a long pixie but I haven't actually made the cut decision yet.

-Tying a sash around my waist in a big bow. You've probably seen this on the blog dozens of times. I have three sashes I made myself in different colors.  When I get a sewing machine again, I will doubtless make more.

What are some of your 'signature' habits or styles that have become a part of you?

What a gorgeous green dress! Love it!

These are really cool "signature" touches. I think it's especially cool how you wear a sash with a big bow! I've noticed that people seem to admire when others aren't afraid to be their unique selves, even if their "signatures" really set them apart from the crowd-hopefully, more people will embrace their unique personal flair!

Some of my "signature" touches include: lots of flowy skirts and dresses (especially wraparound hippie skirts-I rarely wear pants); crazy hats (I switch between 2 crazy hats for special days that the Catholic Church celebrates. It's really random, no one else does it, but I've been doing it for years); the words "epic" and "awesome"-according to other people, I say those words a lot; and a lack of shoes (I usually go barefoot or wear flip flops year-round).

It was really interesting to read every detail that you shared! I can't think of my own except for that I always buy a lot of accessories, I love owning them, but I rarely wear any

You look stunning! Love the idea of having a signature look

What a gorgeous green dress and red scarf! You look genuinely comfortable and confident in this outfit, so clearly you have a good grasp on your signature style. My signature style includes: 1) flowy maxi dresses with banded waists, 2) sun hats, and 3) tying button downs in front while cuffing the sleeves. That pretty much sums up 75% of my outfit posts, so safe to say that's my signature style: easy, feminine, and functional. Great post!

I love this post! I've always had longer hair and even when I think about cutting it, I stop myself. I'm petite so wearing heels is also something I'm known for - however, my work in a hospital two days a week really does hurt my style there! Finally, I love those Pilot pens. They really are great.

I love how you are so confident and own yourself!! I always wanted to wear more rings but the truth is that they bother me!!

I love this dress!! I'd have to say my signature style is almost always wearing dresses. I wear them almost all of the time. And wearing jewelry. I have calmed down with the jewelry a good bit, but I'm always wearing my watch and my pandora bracelet and a bracelet my husband got me.

I like this! I love that you own who you are and that you are confident in that... it really shows. :) I think my signature style is classic with a bit of an edge.

I love this! It's what makes you unique and that's beautiful!

I used to wear a lot of rings all the time a few years back.. I think you just re-inspired me to do it again!

I love your 'signature style!' I could never pull off so many rings at once.

I love your style! My signatures are probably my piercings, eyeliner wings and my red lipstick. Definitely me!

I really like this post. I honestly don't think I have any "signatures" of my own. I'm not good with fashion or hair or anything really.

I love your outfit! It's super cute, and those colors go together so well! I love unique earrings as well, but my ears apparently hate piercings and 3 of the holes closed up, so I only have one left. ._. Sigh! I may go repierce them at some point!

I'm not sure I have any signatures. Long hair, tiny handwriting, yoga pants and tank tops (if the weather's warm enough)? :D?

My big signature is wearing my hair in a bun and wearing my glasses (because either 1. my contacts won't sit still, or 2. we can't afford contacts)

oh wow, i don't think i have anything that is very 'signature' you know? trying to think.. not really haha! i really can't think of anything. i like stripes? lol. this dress is gorgeous on you!

The sash in a big bow is definitely you--and I've wanted to try that as well. I love that you write with multi colored pens. Glitter pens need to come back into my life. :) Hmmm, you know, I used to wear a lot of colorful socks with oxfords, maybe that's my signature? I also never wear pants. In terms of non-fashion things, I always draw something in any card I write then color it pretty sufficiently.

This dress is absolutely gorgeous on you...green is definitely your color. And I love the addition of the red. Such a great combo!

Such a cute outfit, Rachel!
I was known in college for wearing large hoops or dangly earrings at ALL times. I even napped in giant hoops and my best friend was always amazed I could do that and it not bother me. In retrospect, I have no idea how I could even sleep like that haha... Overall though, I have always been known for wearing interesting or attractive earrings. Always gold in color and always dangly.

I love the Pilot G-2 pens! I use all the different colors to keep my planner color coded. :)

I used to wear unique earrings all the time! My zipper earrings were particularly popular with my friends. These days I pretty much always wear either my pearls or silver hoops. I get lazy with my accessorizing. ;)

I would't think to wear those 2 colors together, but you are really rocking that combo!!!

Excellent question! Some of my signatures are signing my name with a heart, using the term "dear gal" with the same reckless abandon that Jay Gatsby threw around "Old Sport", being very (intentionally) colour coordinated, writing amply sized blog posts on subjects I'm passionate about, and using long scarves as belts (especially with vintage shirtwaist dresses).

That's so great that you've nailed done a style that's all your own. And that's such a lovely dress!

When I was a kid I had a big, bright pair of dangly parrot earrings and I thought I was THE COOLEST when I had them on. I wonder what happened to those things...

What a super interesting post! You've really got me thinking about what my signatures are and I'm honestly not really sure what they are.

Great article to spur me on to think about the signature me. I do have a signature style, but I've strayed from it since I've become a stay-at-home-mom. Despite what the 50s culture wanted, dresses and heels that I loved for the workplace aren't very conducive to cheerio messes, bath times and multiple spit-up messes on me each day. Maybe I need to establish a new signature. Going to contemplate this one. :)

Lovely outfit Rachel! Enjoyed reading about your signatures! The colorful pens sound awesome--and a great match for your personality and clothing style!

My signatures would be always wearing a watch, having my hair parted a certain way (basically I've had the same hairstyle for 5 years in 3 main variations), and probably wearing flared denim skirts and approx. 2 inch-heels (usually either on leather boots or sandals).
