As a blogger, I've written about lots of different things on the internet over the past few years...but the topic of tattoos is one I've stayed away from. Tattoos are generally not "recommended" in the culture that I come from, and they can be such a hot button topic, and at the same time, such a personal issue, that it's been one topic that I've just had no interest in delving into online.
But now I'm putting aside any fears which I may have had to share our tattoo story.
See, it's been a joke for as long as we've been married that I have always encouraged Angel to get a tattoo that reads: Rachel's - the possessive form of my name.
Something about jokes that last for half a decade is that after a while they cease to seem quite as crazy as they did at first, and, for a while now, we've been really considering getting the tattoo done.
We checked out the cost of a one-color small tattoo from a local artist, and were surprised to find that it wasn't as much as we were expecting (I heard about lots of expensive tattoos back in my beauty school days). Angel stipulated that fair is fair, and upon reflecting that a couple tattoo is only really a couple tattoo if both members of the couple get it, I decided I was willing to go for it.
I mean, they always say not to get tattoos with a guy because if the relationship ends, you don't want a permanent reminder...but 6 years in, it's not like I could 'delete' this much of my life anyways, so there's not much chance anything could make me forget about Angel even on the off chance that I wanted to.
We wrote our own names in simple handwriting for the artist to copy:
And it actually wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. Given our jobs and the need for no visible tattoos, we both got it our our upper backs, so I won't be sharing photos of the actual tattoos, since I don't think blogs are the best place to show skin.
So, yeah, that's it. This post was kind of a hard one to write, but I wanted to share the unlikely story--I don't think of myself as the kind of person who would actually want to face the commitment of getting a tattoo. Happy April 1st!
Ha! This was a good joke and I totally believed you.
I have a tattoo but it is hidden. It's on my lower left side of my stomach / hip area. It's a pack of stars =) And that isn't an April fool's joke either.
It isn't a well looked upon thing in my community either and I knew I didn't want it visible for everyone so that is why I got it there.
PHEW!!I was thinking thats so risky getting your significant other's name tattooed on you, I have a tattoo that i got for no reason, i just took a friend to get a tattoo and just for fun got a tattoo (stupid i know) thank God it's a beautiful meaning or else i would be living in regret, so i don't really think i would ever get another tattoo again!
Ha! That's awesome. There's ink for everyone! I happen to think tattoos are a great tool for self-expression. I went through a phase where I loathed the little flower I had inked on my wrist when I was a teen. It took me 20 years to cover it up with a design that suited me better. It felt like putting on a new and more appropriate piece of jewelry. Great post!
That's really nice!! I keep thinking of having our wedding date done.
I am still so scared to get mine! i feel like it would hurt so bad. But I've been thinking of doing it for 4 years so that must mean that I really want one??? haha
I would totally get a pineapple tattoo, if husband approved :) I think it's awesome!
I didn't even bother reading all of this. I knew it was a joke right away! Ha ha!
bisous

HA. I kept thinking as I was reading that I never expected a post like this from you. Now it all makes sense ;) but at the same time, from what I know of him, I could totally see Angel tattooing your name on him.
Such a sweet, meaningful tattoo idea! I got a tattoo a long time ago and want to re-do it but I am chicken b/c I know it hurts!
Hahahaha the fact that you can tell who reads and who skims from the comments is priceless... I want to work on something like this for next year! Good one!
My husband and I have a similar joke, but we'd never do it. Both of us don't like needles.
Ha love the post :)
Love that you guys went through with it. I have been with my husband for 17 years now and married 11. I'd put his name on me without a second though. But Im on bloodthinners and he worries about me lol.
So simple, yet so beautiful! I have one on my left foot, and am considering getting another maybe on my wrist. Great story :)
My husband has several tattoos and wants me to get them. I think it's a person to person preference and don't judge either way. Yours is simple and a beautiful story. :)
Hah! I totally thought this was real! And thought this would kindof be a boring tattoo for you to get given your adventurous and creative fashion sense! Good one :)
I kind of fancy a tattoo, but then I know I'd regret it a few weeks later... and I'd never know what to get.
Oh, wait a minute... so you're saying you DIDN'T actually get matching tattoos? Damn. I believed you for a minute :)
I keep thinking about getting matching tats with my BF (we've been together for 5 years) but I would want it to be something we BOTH like and share in common which is why we were thinking of doing something with our dog. Maybe paw prints or something :)
XOXO and hope you have a great weekend!
I am proud to say that as soon as I read the title, I knew it was a joke. lol Though it was definitely a clever one! Props for that for sure!
Heh, this is hilarious--especially reading the believing comments! I don't believe anything on April 1st, but halfway through the story you had just about convinced me...
Joke or no joke...I love my tattoos:)
I totally believed this for a minute. Happy April 1st! :)
I totally believed you until the last paragraph and I thought, "Wait a minute...this doesn't sound like Rachel AT ALL." Then I remembered the date. Good one!
I'm going to assume that this is a post in lieu of the day (I take everything with several grains of salt today), in which case-this is hilarious! And clever. I appreciate how you took advantage of April Fool's Day to write a post on tattoos. Next thing you know, someone will be searching the internet for tattoo stuff and will wind up on your blog and get very, very confused :P
You got me.
I think that is cool.
This is the best! Oh my gosh. I adore this. You know, I've always wanted a tattoo of a whale--my last name, Hval, means whale in Norweigen--somewhere on me perhaps on my hip, but I'm afraid I won't like it!
Hahaha as I was reading this I was kind of surprised, and then I got to the end! :) SO funny.
So, as I was reading this I thought maybe it was a joke. But then it was so well crafted that I thought maybe it wasn't.... Ha! You guys are so funny I wouldn't actually be surprised if you did this!
You did this so well I wasn't sure at first that it was a joke, but common consensus in the comments in that it is... so... I think the idea is a really cute one. Maybe add a bar code below the name for effect??
