Wearing What You Love vs. What is Practical
I am not, by nature, a wearer of casual summer clothing. I like dresses, bows, tights, and sparkly shoes. I do like t-shirts, but more often paired with a fun skirt or layered under a colorful jumper or dress.
But the dry season has been brutal this year, with temperatures above 90 degrees every day for months. Add on the normal 90 percent humidity and tropical sunshine...and even Rachel has to give in to the necessity of casual summer clothing that is comfortable.
There are two ways to dress in Malaysia: dressing for visiting an air-conditioned place, like an office or church or the mall or movie theater (movie theaters are the coldest, and usually require a light jacket), or....dressing for being outdoors or inside our non-air-conditioned home.
I'm at home a lot, and if we're not in the house, I'm outdoors, playing with the kids, and I decided that if I'm going to be forced to wear clothing appropriate for the no-aircon life, at the very least, I have to actually like them. So I went out shopping for practical clothing for the first time in a very long time (normally, I wear what could be considered 'practical clothing' so rarely that, historically, for the infrequent times that I wear them, I've relied completely on free t-shirts and capris that pre-date my marriage). On my shopping trip, I found a few new things that will be comfortable for the hot, long days at home, and they're actually appealing enough that I don't mind dressing casually when necessary.
I'm seeking a way to wear clothes that are practical and comfortable in the intense heat with an active lifestyle, that at the same time show a little bit of the unexpected quirky style that I love. I'm never gonna be a shorts and t-shirt kind of girl...but if the shirt has Mickey and Minnie on it....and the belt holding up my shorts is studded with unnecessary amounts of metal...and my earrings are bumblebees...then I'll probably be okay with dressing casually. At least part of the time.
How do you find ways to work your personal style into the types of outfits that are made necessary by your lifestyle?

Great blog post! Your climate is much nicer than that in Canada. In the summer I tend to wear shorts and t-shirts or rompers. When working in schools I choose maxi skirts.
I can not imagine living in 90 degrees with no a/c. lol I am a capri wearer but not much of a tshirt person. Good luck in your new clothes.
Great post -- I resisted spending money on nice workout clothes for a long time. But the fact is, at this point in my life {work at home, two kids, etc.} I live in comfortable clothing every day. So, I might as well buy pieces that are good quality and that I feel good in.
I can only imagine how humid it must be - summers in Chicago were awful regarding the humidity. But, you are right, it is all much more bearable when wearing the right attire!
Love your casual outfit - very cute!
It's cute! I think it's a fun outfit for the heat. Stay cool!
I've decided you remind me of Anne of Green Gables. You're a dreamer, but can be practical when you absolutely have to be (although Anne didn't do much by way of practicality.) Except you're Rachel of Malaysia. And you always dress so adorably - even if it is casual!
I love that adorable t-shirt!
I live in Finland and winters can be brutal here. But luckily I love big sweaters and hoodies. They are so comfortable. I grew up in Thailand so I miss flip flops and shorts.
It's interesting because I'm totally the "comfortable" dresser. Having worked in the music industry and at coffee shops, dressing up has never been needed. You'll either be the only one or you run the risk of getting covered in coffee (ha!). Now I work in an office that is FREEZING 99% of the time and so despite it being warm outside and at my home, I'm sitting in long pants, hoodies and under blankets while at my desk! It's a struggle to find that balance!
You look great! I am totally a casual summer person... so much so, in fact, that I have recently realized I am in NEED (not want) of more dressy summer outfits for work attire. So, maybe we've switched places?
You look wonderfully cute! I think it's so cool how you incorporate your own personal style and elegance into something casual like a t-shirt and shorts. I rarely wear t-shirts, and I don't know the last time I've worn shorts (for something other than sleeping or wearing under a skirt), but if it was that hot with no A/C, I'd probably learn to adapt to casual clothing, too!
Yoga pants! Every day! I think a lot of people think they're sloppy but it all depends what you wear with them, and if you've put on a little makeup and tidied your hair. I prefer yoga pants to jeans or even shorts because I can easily transition from my home office to my yoga mat, or to the gym, and I always stay comfy!
I'm glad you found some clothes you like. I prefer the more comfortable ones but I think that is because I was so into fitness a few years ago that I splurged on good fitness clothes, and now, that's all I want to wear. =)
I agree with you... I'm more of a skirts and dresses kind of girl, so wearing t-shirts and shorts (besides workout clothes of course!) is hard for me to do. I'm glad you found some things you like!
Super cute! Every bit of the outfit right down to the bee earrings. :)
I used to dress for style now I'm totally a comfy dresser!! For work I do have to get dressed up, but as soon as I get home it's on with the soft comfy clothes!
What a cute outfit! I definitely try to find clothes that is not only comfortable, but functional & stylish! It's hard work but I find once I invest in a good number of basics it makes things a lot easier!

That t-shirt is so cute! Of course, I'm a big fan of graphic tees. Especially ones that feature fun characters. I own 2 Harry Potter t-shirts. A Marvel Avengers one and a couple Star Wars shirts. You can almost always find me in one of these. Of course, I work from home so I am usually wearing just a t-shirt.
I honestly can't even imagine living in a house with no air conditioning ...
My eyes opened, and the first thing I thought of when I could put thoughts together was I want to be in show business. Never wanted anything else. I used to sneak in the costume room at my nursery school and smell the costumes.
