What I Wear to the Beach

First of all, a swimsuit? No way. Perhaps that's not the normal reaction, but when your nearest and dearest ocean is mostly famous for its pollution and swarms of jellyfish, you don't really tend to think things like "Hmmm, I ought to go swimming in that water."

Otherwise, it depends on the day's activities. If we're hiking to a beach, or planning to be active and play games when we get there, shorts or capris and a t-shirt are perfect.

However, if this is not such an active beach trip, more of a stereotypical "Let's go walk out there and watch that cool sunset before we get dinner at market!" kind of outing--I'm more likely to switch the shorts/capris for a comfortable long skirt. This one is made from local batik prints--to me, it just screams quirky kindergarten teacher, and that pretty much describes me perfectly, so you'll understand why I had to buy it.

Footwear on the beach is a funny thing. I usually wear Chacos, because I can wear them even while wading, and they won't get pulled off my feet by the current and they can be washed and dried easily. Chacos don't look great with skirts, though, so I borrowed a pair of flip-flops for this outing. Yeah, I've lived in the tropics for year now and have yet to invest in a pair of flip-flops...somehow, they just never really seem like an urgent need, you know? We loved visiting the beach in China, but that's when I really saw the full span of footwear at the beach--every time we went, we'd see at least a couple dozen women wearing platform heels or even heeled boots, and men wearing sneakers or leather dress shoes, walking around in the sand. That takes dedication!

What's your preferred footwear at the beach?

That skirt is beautiful and perfect for a walk on the beach! :)

I'm definitely a flip flops person for spending time at the beach. Being a Queenslander I pretty much wear nothing else for half of the year anyway!

I love casual style. I LIVE in flip flops. Can you believe I get away with it all year long, even in December? (I live in South TX). Nice pics.

Very fun skirt, looks colorful and tropical like the beach! It's sad that the ocean near you is filled with jellyfish, swimming is my favorite thing to do at the beach!

Love that skirt! I'm a barefoot kind of girl. I peel my shoes off as soon as I hit the sand.

What a fun skirt! It is colorful but also probably keeps you cool when it gets hot! I love the beach- I'm jealous! :) I live nowhere near one!

I love that skirt! In Hawaii, I usually go barefoot on the beach. But chacos are a great idea because sometimes you need to protect yourself against rocks, jellyfish, and other unpleasantness underfoot while you are walking along the sand. I might have to invest in a pair.

i think chacos is how we first connected! love that you use them as your main beachwear - they are SO good! although my feet are now swollen more often than not and i really don't want to adjust the straps so they are taking a backseat to my summer at the moment.

I have heard so many great things about Chacos lately. I need to check them out. I love your skirt...so pretty!

That's such a great combination. Even I'd pair black with something colourful like that skirt! You look amazing! :)

I love the skirt! At the beach, I prefer to go barefoot. If I have to choose a pair of shoes I would say flip flops. I'm pretty much barefoot all the time unless footwear is required, like when we go to the store. I keep a pair of slip ons in my van so that I can continue my barefoot life away while not in the store, but also so that I don't have to worry about wearing shoes to the vehicle before I head to town. :-)

I love that skirt! It looks so perfectly boho/hippy, but not in a crazy way. And I would totally wear it with chacos!

I love that skirt! Also... boots and dress shoes at the beach? What are those people thinking? I love TEVA flip flops. I wear them everywhere, including the beach.

I feel like you need sandals at the beach. Something that won't actually trap and hold sand. That leads to blisters.
Though I don't remember the last time I went to the beach ha ha.

Such the opposite of what I was expecting but as you described your nearest water source, I imagine why you chose this outfit! Nice patchwork skirt!

Love the skirt! Looks free and comfy. I think I could live in my flip flops, especially if I lived in the tropics!

I love the skirt. Not sure what to wear at the beach, I don't live anywhere near one . I see one every two years orso , but haven't been to the ocean in a long time.

Super cute skirt! It reminds me so much of the skirts my mom wears to work (she's a music/art teacher). And that's too bad about the dirty water... I didn't even think about that when I read the title haha!

That skirt is super gorgeous, with all the colours and patches, not to mention breezy and cool for those hot days. Great post!

Wow! Definitely not heels. I love flip flops or bare feet, but I've become wary of what's in the ocean as I've gotten older, so I'm not ashamed to wear water shoes these days!

I usually wear shorts and a t shirt and a swimsuit underneath for IF I swim. I rarely go to the beach because it's just not fun for me and it's hot and I don't like to tan (gotta be skin safe!)

I'm nearly always barefoot on the beach. Even if I'm in a cute outfit, I usually pull my shoes off (usually sandals, chacos, or flipflops) when I get to the sand. I just love to be barefoot in the sand! Love you beachy outfit!
