The Random Writings of Rachel: This One's for All the Smartphone Lovers Out There...

This One's for All the Smartphone Lovers Out There...

Charlie Puth's "One Call Away" was randomly playing in the background somewhere--at a mall in Tokyo, I think--when I was suddenly struck with the fact that Instagram fits perfectly into the lyrics where Superman should be. And a parody was born.

This music video was easier to put together than our first parody music video, largely because that first video had taught me a little about using Audacity and I already knew what steps we needed to take. Unlike our first video, this parody isn't quite as self-referential--we DO really, really like to eat lunch....but no one in the family is actually addicted to a smartphone, and we don't own all that many to include in the video, which meant that we borrowed some friends and their phones for footage.

Vocals are by my sister Rebekah. We worked on imitating Charlie Puth's style to the point where, when Mom heard the song, she didn't think it even sounded like Rebekah, who is naturally a very vibrant, passionate sort of singer--it took some work to get the more toned-down, breathy style that suited the original tone of the song.

I'll admit, I'm pretty proud of the lyrics I wrote. For someone as out-of-touch with pop culture and technology as I am, I was impressed with how many references to apps and games and things people do with smartphones that I was able to squeeze in. And yes, I'm the kind of person who shamelessly admits to being impressed with herself.

Hope you enjoy this love song from a smartphone to its owner! Feel free to share--like it or not, we live in a smartphone kinda world...seems like there's plenty of people who can relate to this one...

  2. THIS IS AMAZING. SO much better than the original version. I especially like everyone lined up at the mall, and that one woman is double-fisting two phones...dying.

  6. I love this!!!!!!!!!!! It's so true. I don't have a smartphone, so I think this kind of smartphone obsession is easier to see. And super random, but I love the shirt that your mom is wearing in the mall scene :)

  14. This is awesome. Every time I see something like this it reminds me that I really do need to put down my phone more. That image of the phone on the toilet seat outside the shower is a place I hope never to go! I think this song will be burned in my memory forever as warning!

  17. This is great. It's so weird to see two people sitting side-by-side or across a table from each other texting and not looking at each other (although I'll be the first to admit that I have been guilty of it!)
