Charlie Puth's "One Call Away" was randomly playing in the background somewhere--at a mall in Tokyo, I think--when I was suddenly struck with the fact that Instagram fits perfectly into the lyrics where Superman should be. And a parody was born.
This music video was easier to put together than our first parody music video, largely because that first video had taught me a little about using Audacity and I already knew what steps we needed to take. Unlike our first video, this parody isn't quite as self-referential--we DO really, really like to eat lunch....but no one in the family is actually addicted to a smartphone, and we don't own all that many to include in the video, which meant that we borrowed some friends and their phones for footage.
Vocals are by my sister Rebekah. We worked on imitating Charlie Puth's style to the point where, when Mom heard the song, she didn't think it even sounded like Rebekah, who is naturally a very vibrant, passionate sort of singer--it took some work to get the more toned-down, breathy style that suited the original tone of the song.
I'll admit, I'm pretty proud of the lyrics I wrote. For someone as out-of-touch with pop culture and technology as I am, I was impressed with how many references to apps and games and things people do with smartphones that I was able to squeeze in. And yes, I'm the kind of person who shamelessly admits to being impressed with herself.
Hope you enjoy this love song from a smartphone to its owner! Feel free to share--like it or not, we live in a smartphone kinda world...seems like there's plenty of people who can relate to this one...
