Random News and Life Updates

Give the kids a jump rope and they'll be occupied for hours...whether they'll be safely occupied is a completely different matter. This is so rare for me, but I'm linking up with Stuff and Things since I figure a random thoughts/stories/updates post should be posted approx. once in a blue moon.

-I got interviewed for the local Expat Magazine for the Sept. issue and since I'm not really sure on how to get a hard copy (it's the kind of magazine that usually I find in coffeeshops and such), I was impatiently waiting until the September issue was uploaded online, and it's finally there on the website. My article is on page 80, if you're curious.

-One lazy Sunday afternoon recently, Angel didn't feel like going running, so he got on his computer, signed up for a 10K this month and a half-marathon next month, and then miraculously felt like running. I still felt like having a nap.

- I went out to buy a sewing machine last week. My Mom's desire for me to sew costumes for VBS this year is what has tipped the scales. I'm dreaming of designing dresses and skirts again. The baby sister wants a WonderWoman costume designed for her superhero-themed 10th birthday party. We actually found an appliance store with two sewing machines but they were both out of stock, and they may or may not be on sale in a few weeks, so we'll try again later. That's shopping for you.

I won a giveaway, and Kira drew a cartoon of me--wearing the outfit from this post:

-I was reading a Bible story to the kids, and it was the story of Moses' death. I read from the children's Bible story book, "Moses died, and God buried him somewhere in the plain." Granted, this is a bit of an unusual tale, even as Bible stories go, but I was surprised when Shiloh burst out: "WHY DID GOD BURY MOSES IN AN AIRPLANE?" It took me a while before I understood...plain...plane... and then we talked about what a plain means as a geographical term. And I'm still cracking up about it.

- On Malaysia's Independence Day I had a holiday, and some free time, so I obviously used some of that time to paint a bunch of triangles on the dresser that I painted a pineapple on a few months ago. Can you tell that I only own two colors of paint? I think I'd like to add a sunshine peeking over my triangles that vaguely resemble a bumpy horizon...but that would mean investing in a tube of yellow paint and I'm not sure I need that kind of commitment right now.

-Every time I look in the mirror I think: "Man, I really love my purple hair." Sorry if that seems rude. I've never been great at pretending to lack self-confidence.

-My little sister went on vacation and got engaged at the Grand Canyon. What a coincidence! Now we're talking wedding hair and reception nachos. The Malaysian side of the family is eager to meet her guy. Angel, I, and my parents and siblings have an advantage over the rest of the family here because we actually have met him, and I gave him a haircut a few years ago, which totally gives me almost SIL status already. Because all the people I do hair for these days are either related by blood, marriage, or unofficial adoption.

What's new with you and yours?

  1. So exciting for your sister! Congrats! Also, those triangles look so cool…if only I had the willpower to spruce things up like that haha

  5. Seriously who wouldn't want to be Wonder Woman? You're sister has great taste. My son is so into superheroes and often asks me if I could be any superhero, who would I be? Of course it's Wonder Woman.

You're purple hair looks wonderful. I don't normally like coloured hair but it looks really stylish.

  6. I don't lack self confidence either. Don't apologize for it! It's a beautiful thing.

  7. That's a great article in the Expat magazine! Thanks for sharing the link with us. I really like the triangles on your dresser-and it's funny how you mention the paint situation. Sometimes, I'll have a similar thought about yarn. I'll think that it would be fun to knit a certain item in one particular color, but that would mean buying yarn and having a bunch leftover, and I'm never sure if I want yet another random ball of yarn adding to my already large stockpile.

  8. Why did God bury Moses in an airplane...ALL the lol's over here! That's amazing.

I think it's great to be proud of the things you love about yourself! There are too many things that make us insecure, it's nice to have things you can be confident in.

I need a little bit of Angel's motivation, is he willing to share?

  10. That cartoon is AWESOME. How cool! And I laughed about the running. It is funny how signing up for a race suddenly gives you all sorts of motivation. That is how it works for me too!

SO many people have purple hair these days. What's that about? I have two girls at school, one with pink and one with purple.

  19. Ahh, I love all these tidbits! best of luck to Angel on his races--prepping for events is such a big part of my life, so I'm always excited to see others chase the same passion. Also, what a hilarious story with the "plain" misunderstanding--language hiccups are seriously the best. The other day, I was tlaking to my host dad who's a luthier, and I told him there's no dinner plate in my violin because I mixed up "label" and "plate" in French.

Your purple hair really is stunning too! And HUGE congrats to your younger sister--what big news :)

  20. Love love love the purple hair, too! (It's one of my favorite colors, so you didn't have to convince me much!) Congrats on the interview--I've written for several local magazine like that (where they have a free hard copy and then one accessible online), and usually, if you email/call the reporter or editor, they will mail you one. Barring that, they can tell you what coffee houses or shops have it nearby. Good luck to Angel with all of his running!

  21. I love your purple hair! I put purple in my hair a couple of months ago but it didn't stay very long at all.I just did a streak so maybe I will do more another time. One of the students at swim lessons dyed her hair pink and well, you can imagine what happens in a pool when you get your pink hair wet!

Yay that your sister got engaged! That is exciting and I hope you all will get to meet him soon.

Angel is funny but I can completely relate! I haven't been feeling like running or exercising at all so I signed up for two 5k's and signed myself back up for crossfit.
